Vicinity of Palm Coast

2nd Florida HQs

Col. Kearney and Capt. Bocken,

Sirs, it is my privilege to offer you both this after-action report as to the recent engagement at Pellicer Creek.

Arriving Friday afternoon, I found 1st Sgt. Hollingworth in camp - having done much of the leg work needed in establishing camp.  Truth be told, Sgt. Hollingsworth proved to be an invaluable asset to myself and this army throughout this campaign.  The first morning, we found ourselves with a company of approximately 7 soldiers and fell under the command of Col. Kohl.  Being very optimistic, we sought to dislodge the enemy from his breast works, but were simply unable to drive him out.  Overwhelmed, they eventually they drove us off the field.  We took heavy casualties.  After the battle, however, we suspected that the enemy had thrown all of their forces at us and planned to entrench to fight another day - without reported reinforcements having arrived from St. Augustine.  Fortunately, we received a small number of reinforcements the night following the battle.

Day two of battle, we awoke to a chill in the air as well as new-found confidence that we were able to regroup, incorporate our reinforcements and attack the unsuspecting Yankees.  And what a glorious day it was!  We came upon an unsuspecting enemy wood detail and drove them back to their works.  Both element of surprise and overwhelming numbers were simply too much for the enemy to hold.  Although they made a fight of it, 2nd Florida, flanked by our friends from 37th Alabama, rushed their works and overran the retreating enemy.  I regret to say that several brave boys in Blue decided to dig their heels in, regardless of our oncoming force.  They met both their fate as well as their Maker this day.  In the end, it was a good day's work for 2nd Florida!  I am proud of the men who fought under my command.

Returning to camp, it was decided that no further imminent danger could be found.  The men were disbursed and have returned to their farms.  My prayer is that each have arrived safe and will find respite in the care of their loved ones - only to be ready to fight yet another day.

Lastly, I want to thank you both for allowing me to lead the men of 2nd Florida in this final engagement.  It has been a privilege and an honor, sirs.  Again, my hat is off to 1st Sgt. Hollingworth for assisting me in all things throughout the engagement.

This concludes my after-action report of Pellicer Creek.

I am, your Obediant Servant,

Capt. W. A. Alonzo (Brev.)
